The Library Project

Reading is the cornerstone of learning. Millions of children across India living below the poverty line are denied this basic right and have never experienced the joy of reading a book in a library. Low income school’s that are doing wonderful work in this area do not have the funds to build libraries or source books and furniture. Jaiveer has worked actively with the Angelique Foundation in India to raise funds for this cause and provide fully equipped libraries to schools for underprivileged students.

Sourcing age appropriate books and curating booklists was key as it would have a social impact and compliment the basic learning that students received at school. Themes included health and hygiene, environment, respect for peers and family and popular mythological stories. Each library consisted of 400 books. Simple number games and puzzles were also purchased to enable skill building in these areas. The furniture and carpeting were sourced from a local vendor in bright colours and the bookshelves were especially designed keeping in mind the safety of the children. Jaiveer worked with a team of like-minded peers to complete each library in under a week. The libraries are now thriving places of learning and the schools have included a special “reading lesson” into their daily time – table.

The SDMC School Library, New Delhi
(February 2019)

The SDMC School library was set up keeping the original artwork on the walls by students of the school, intact. Students were especially asked for their feedback related to stories of the characters they had depicted on the walls and the booklist included many of these. A team of students from The British School worked to complete the library and it was inaugurated by the Principal of The British School, New Delhi.

Arthur Foot Foundation Library, Uttrakhand
(September 2018)

This was an especially rewarding project as the school is located in the remote village of Banarjhud in the foothills of Uttarakhand bordering a forest. While coordination relating to transportation of the materials posed a challenge, the reward lay in seeing the happy faces of the students and teachers once the brightly painted library was complete. A team of volunteer students helped to complete the library in record time. The library was inaugurated by the teacher in charge of community service at The Doon School.

Maitri Library, New Delhi
(July 2018)

This library was set up in a small space adjoining The Maitri India administrative office. The library was inaugurated by the Chairman of The Doon School and the President of The Doon School Old Boys Society. The Doon School Old Boys society later went on to contribute two air conditioners to the library premises. Approximately 50 students between the age group of 7 – 14 use the library by rotation each week. Peers and volunteers have come forward to contribute towards reading activities for the students.
